Convention centers across the country are undergoing transformations, whether it’s upgrading to keep up with technology and facilities, expanding their footprint to attract larger groups or citywide audiences, or increasing their profile to better compete in the market. Here are some examples.

Savannah Convention Center

of Savannah Convention Center The Savannah Convention Center is currently undergoing a major renovation project that will essentially double its size. Once complete, the $276 million expansion project will double the exhibit hall space available for events to 200,000 square feet and include a new 40,000 square foot ballroom, 15 new meeting rooms, a 58-foot-wide hangar door and a new parking garage with capacity for 900 cars. This expansion underscores the Savannah Convention Center’s commitment to providing unparalleled facilities and service to its guests and further enhances its reputation as a premier destination for events of all sizes.

The SCC, Georgia’s first LEED Gold certified convention center, has been managed by the Georgia World Congress Center Authority since 2014. As of press time, a planned opening date was unknown.

Fontainebleau Miami Beach

The Coastal Convention Centre will be five stories tall.

Iconic Fontainebleau Miami Beach An all-new, one of the most significant expansions in the game’s 70-year history Coastal Convention Center Scheduled to open in November 2024, celebrating the legendary beachfront resort’s 70th anniversary, the five-story, 45,000-square-foot addition will feature a range of meeting and event spaces, from intimate and personal to grand and large-scale, with an overall look that reflects the architectural legacy of original designer Morris Lapidus.

Coastal Convention Center will include a 16,500-square-foot divisible ballroom with outdoor terrace, a 9,500-square-foot junior ballroom, a total of 15 meeting rooms and 15,000 square feet of pre-function space. Other standout features include a grand staircase that pays homage to the Fontainebleau Miami Beach’s “Staircase to Nowhere,” floor-to-ceiling windows that bring natural light to meeting rooms, outdoor street-level meeting space, LED walls and directional signage, and a 7,000-square-foot Tides rooftop terrace with beautiful ocean views. With sustainability as a top priority, Coastal Convention Center is built to LEED-certified standards, including features such as insulated glass to control interior temperatures and reduce energy use, and a rainwater collection and recycling system to increase water efficiency.

Los Angeles Convention Center

Recently Approved Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC) Expansion and modernization projectsPlans include completing the project in time for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with the design, schedule and costs finalized before construction begins in spring 2025.

LACC recently acquired a sculpture by South African artist Marco Olivier.

City officials have long believed that Los Angeles’ lack of contiguous space puts it at a competitive disadvantage in attracting large citywide conventions, especially as competitors have completed or are in the process of completing major expansions. The new construction will connect the two existing South and West Exhibit Halls with an additional 190,000 square feet of space to create one contiguous hall. It will also add 55,000 square feet of new meeting room space and 95,000 square feet of multi-purpose space. Plans also include a redesign of Gilbert Lindsay Plaza, adding public open space and creating an exciting outdoor venue for event programming.

“The expansion and modernization of the Los Angeles Convention Center is essential to the continued recovery of our local economy,” Adam Burke, president and CEO of the Los Angeles Convention and Visitors Bureau, told media. “Conventions held throughout the city support thousands of jobs and hundreds of businesses in every neighborhood and region of Los Angeles. We thank the City Council’s leadership for advancing this vital initiative with today’s vote, and we look forward to seeing this world-class facility come to life as one of the travel industry’s premier meeting locations.”

Broward County Convention Center

The Sandpiper is located on the first floor and can also be divided into two rooms.

In 2025, this sun-soaked venue will expand, adding an additional 1.2 million square feet to the venue, including a vast new waterfront plaza, outdoor amphitheater and the 29-story Omni Fort Lauderdale Headquarters Hotel, which will be connected to the convention center. Austin Convention Center

Despite being the 11th largest city in the country, the Texas capital has only the 59th largest convention facility. But that’s about to change. In late October, the Austin City Council approved the selection of two joint venture firms as the architecture and construction manager for the redevelopment and expansion of the Austin Convention Center. The $1.2 billion redevelopment and expansion project will demolish and rebuild the center over four years, nearly doubling rentable space and allowing the convention center to remain competitive in the market. The redevelopment will also provide community-friendly event space, revitalizing the southeast neighborhood of downtown and providing a connection between downtown and East Austin.
