Dolly Parton says the best way to succeed in a 9-to-5 job is to find your dream and stick to it.

While most fans know her for her hit songs, philanthropic work, and acting career, the country music legend is also co-owner of two companies.

In 1986, Parton co-founded Thunderer Productions, which co-produced the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series and films, with her former manager Sandy Gallin. Entertainment Weekly.

That same year, Parton partnered with Herschend Enterprises to form the Dollywood Company and transform the theme park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee into Dollywood. websiteParton still co-owns the theme park, which also includes a dinner theater and a water park.

In an interview with Business Insider, Parton spoke about her advice for Gen Z workers, recalling a line she once shared. X.

“Find out who you are and be intentional about it,” she says. “What I mean is, if you really want to know who you are, you have to put in some serious thought, prayer, and effort to figure out what that is.”

“But dreams do come true, and I’m a perfect example of that. I’m just a country girl from the mountains,” Parton continues.

While Parton said not everyone is “destined to be super successful,” she encouraged Gen Z workers to work hard and take advantage of their talents and opportunities.

“When you have the opportunity to make your dream come true, you build what’s called a brand and become someone people trust,” she says, “and once that dream comes true, you can do business with people.”

Parton understands the importance of branding: Since 2022, she has worked with Duncan Hines and its parent company, Conagra, to launch Dolly-brand cake mixes.

“People ask me: ‘Why do you sell cakes and pies?’ and I say: ‘Because we can, and they’re delicious,'” she told BI. “It’s also part of my heritage. I love music, but I also love cooking.”

Parton also told BI that workers shouldn’t be afraid to change career paths.

“I always say that if you’re doing one thing and you realize it’s not working, it’s okay to pivot mid-way through your dream,” she says.

“Maybe you’ve learned enough about what you were pursuing that God is leading you in a different direction, so the key is to work hard, believe in yourself and go for it,” Parton added.
