GPT 4o powered AI learning assistant for Codecademy courses Earnhire

Earlier this summer, OpenAI released their latest AI model, GPT-4o. Now you can start using this powerful model in interactive learning environments as you work on your courses, paths, or projects.

Our AI Learning Assistant is powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4o to provide instant, personalized coding guidance. In courses, projects, and articles, simply highlight the code you’re working on and click “Explain Code” to see a GPT-4o-generated explanation of the selected code. You can then use your AI Learning Assistant to ask follow-up questions, request clarification, or check your code for errors.

When OpenAI first released its AI learning assistant, it used the large-scale language model GPT-4 Turbo. Now that it has been upgraded to GPT-4o, the AI learning assistant can help you master technical skills and concepts faster. Model evaluationGPT-4o even outperformed GPT-4 Turbo (OpenAI’s previous high intelligence model) in extracting inferences from text. GPT-4o is more efficient and has more advanced coding knowledge as it can generate text two times faster than GPT-4 Turbo.

How to use GPT-4o during training

Before we added the AI learning assistant to our platform, every time we had a question we had to open a new window and give ChatGPT some context about what we were working on. Frequent context switching can be tedious and can distract students from the lesson or project they are focusing on.

You can now start a conversation mid-exercise. The AI learning assistant is highly context-sensitive, so it will respond based on where you are in the exercise and the code you’ve written. For example, instead of writing a lengthy prompt like, “I’m creating a Boolean expression in my Python 3 course for beginners. Here’s the code I’m writing. Please help me understand it,” you can simply select the code in question and click “Explain my code.”

Use GPT-4o to get personalized explanations of the code you write in your course or path.

Think of your AI learning assistant as a more experienced, knowledgeable developer whom you can quickly turn to for help solving questions and exploring complex concepts. For example, when you’re learning a new programming language, AI can help you understand syntax, debug your code, and even suggest improvements in real time. This may seem like a shortcut, but it actually helps you gain a deeper, more practical understanding of coding concepts.

It goes without saying that incorporating AI into your workflow is a standard part of being a productive and competent developer today. If you can become familiar with industry-standard AI tools like GPT-4o during your studies, you’ll be better prepared to enter professional environments where these tools are the norm. In professional environments, developers often use AI to streamline tasks like code completion, automated testing, and data analysis.

“This is another practical way to learn,” says Chirag Makkar, a senior software engineer at Codecademy who helped develop the AI learning assistant. “It’s not about how deeply you understand a particular technology or language, but how quickly you can build a project, learn, and make progress.”
