Job Description

The Dedicated Safety Specialist will be responsible for overseeing all safety operations at their designated location. This includes safety productivity analysis and being knowledgeable in all safety functions. As well as ensuring that all safety, operations and maintenance personnel are adequately trained in identifying safety needs and concerns and where applicable to conduct specific safety functions such as accident reviews, annual reviews, drug screen collections, etc.
 

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for ensuring that all Safety needs are professionally and efficiently addressed, including but not limited to: orientation training, “follow-alongs”, BAT drug screen collection, accident reviews, counseling sessions, etc.
  • Conduct one-on-one training to include, but not limited to: pre-trip, coupling/uncoupling, 45/90 degree backing, mirror adjustment and close quarter right/left turns. All training is required to be accomplished by physically demonstrating how each component is to be performed and then watching each driver physically perform each function. This training may take eight to nine hours per day for several consecutive days in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Conduct daily lot checks and check all equipment for damage. Any damage that is found is checked against the inspection reports that the driver completed.
  • Conduct account specific orientations for new drivers & temporary drivers arriving on account.
  • Conduct Smith System Training.
  • Conduct individual counseling sessions with each driver on account and involve operations, and when applicable, maintenance, in those sessions.
  • Interact daily with operations personnel to identify safety issues or drivers with safety needs.
  • Interact daily with Maintenance Manager to identify safety issues or drivers with safety needs.
  • Identify training needs.
  • Provide 24-hour on-call support as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisory personnel.

Qualifications:

  • High school graduate or equivalent experience.
  • College level coursework preferred.
  • Public speaking and/or adult education experience.
  • Transportation Safety experience preferred.
  • Possess or ability to obtain a Class A CDL within 90 days from start of employment.
  • Possess and maintain exemplary motor vehicle record (MVR).
  • Classroom instruction experience preferred.
  • High level of proficiency in procedures, policies, methodology, and instruction.
  • Knowledge of Federal Regulations and Company requirements, policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State traffic laws and requirements for tractor/trailer equipment.
  • Excellent listening skills.
  • Excellent decision-making ability.
  • Excellent presentation skills in a classroom environment.
  • Excellent customer service skills and ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods of time in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure multi-task environment.
  • Ability to communicate in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Skill in operating a PC and various types of office equipment.
  • Knowledge of at utilizing MS Office Suite.
  • Ability to be flexible with work hours.
  • Ability to work independently and be detail oriented and follow task through to completion.
  • Ability to acclimate and orient drivers to their new position at Werner Enterprises.
  • Ability to travel.
