CONSTRUCTION INSPECTOR Department: Public Services Division: Engineering Pay: GRADE 145: $60,995.61-$88,443.63 Annual Salary ($29.32-$42.52 hourly rate) FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, Merit, Full-Time, Eligible for Benefits GENERAL PURPOSE This position performs technical inspection and plans examining work in enforcing compliance with right of way codes, regulations, ordinances, and Ogden City Engineering Standards. Receives general supervision from the Lead Construction Inspector and/or the City Engineer. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Set-up and operate DATA collecting survey equipment. Determine appropriate traffic control measures needed, implement as appropriate. Maintain a field notebook, DATA collector; record all figures, notes, and site drawings. Perform mathematical calculations to ensure the accuracy of survey findings. Inspect work quality and materials used in a variety of public works projects during various stages of construction and remodeling to ensure compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations. Conduct preliminary examination of plans and specifications of assigned project; determine compliance with the provisions of the construction codes, ordinances, and regulations. Inspect various public works structures including utilities, streets, sidewalks, gutters, structural concrete, storm systems and various other facilities and their compliance with federal, state, and local standards. Check line, grade, size, elevation, and location of structures for conformance with specifications and regulations. Assist Sewer Inspector in implementation, and maintenance of a Fats, Oils and Grease, (FOG) program. Take samples of materials for examination or analysis by laboratories; perform routine materials and field tests to assure material and workmanship quality; coordinate results of tests and verify approval of structure. Observe work during progress and upon completion. Ensure that safety procedures are followed. Coordinate inspection and plans examining activities with other City departments and divisions. Deal with private contractors on construction specifications and procedures; ensure compliance with procedures and regulations. Plan, lay out and record traffic counters; compile raw data into traffic report. Record amounts of materials used, review submittals, and monitor work performed. Prepare various inspection reports as required; maintain files and reports regarding inspection and findings. Respond to and resolve difficult and sensitive citizen inquiries and complaints concerning construction and repair projects. Stays abreast of new trends and innovation in the fields of surveying and construction. Prepare various reports as required. Attends and participates in city and trade meetings. Participate in safety and risk management activities; take action to reduce liability to the city. Attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this position. Employee is required to work as a team and frequently meet with co-workers and supervisors; employee is required to communicate in-person with the public during office hours; and employees are required to use on-site equipment. Perform other related duties as required/assigned. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS At least two years of surveying or construction experience. High school diploma or its equivalent. Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying. Higher levels require additional experience and/or education of up to eight years, involving surveying and construction inspection, and successful completion of National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) certifications.
