What is your background as a recruiter?

I have worked in sales and sales leadership for 25 years across a variety of technology-driven industries including telecommunications, digital media and travel. After my stint with Fairfax Media, I was talking to a friend who was working for a niche sales focused recruitment agency in Melbourne and it occurred to me that with my knowledge of sales and the sales process, I could add value to organisations looking to attract salespeople. I quickly found success as a consultant and then led a team of high performing consultants. After 5.5 years with my previous company and completing my higher education in leadership and management, I decided to branch out and start my own company.

MS&Co is a talent management consulting firm that provides a wide range of solutions to SMEs, mid-market, large enterprises and government organizations. We offer a variety of solutions including organizational design, change management, sales competencies, job design, permanent recruitment, occupational health and safety consulting, diversity and inclusion consulting, and more. In most cases, my clients leverage my network and knowledge of sales processes to attract and retain top talent to their organizations.

What changes do you think we will see in the recruitment industry over the next 12 months?

Rather than a major change, it is more of an evolution and a continuation of what has happened over the past few years. Recruiting as a service has seen considerable growth over the past few years. 2020 saw a shift towards virtual recruiting as governments enacted laws restricting people’s movements during the pandemic. This trend will continue to evolve as organizations now adopt remote work environments for many positions. Recruiting as an industry will continue to operate in a virtual environment.

Another trend that will continue to grow is the importance of employer brand. Organizations that have a clearly defined vision, mission, and values they live by create a culture that attracts top talent. People want to work for organizations they feel connected to. Sometimes that connection is because of the values they follow and other times it’s because the organization is trustworthy.

Either way, the next few years are predicted to be extremely lucrative for specialist recruitment businesses as organisations across the country, across all sectors, return to normal operations. Prior to the pandemic, Australia’s recruitment industry was already an $11.6 billion annual industry. Industry statistics from Ibis World as of Januaryst As of April 2022, that figure is $16.4 billion, and is expected to grow at an annualized rate of 7.6% for the remainder of 2023.

What is one piece of advice you would give to employers?

I give the same advice to all my clients: Create positions that people really want to do!!! There are three foundations for engagement in a role: connection, contribution and authenticity. Without these, you will be constantly rotating people in work positions. Also, adopt Theory Y management techniques in your organization. Trust your employees to make the right decisions to achieve the role objectives and responsibilities. Give your employees complete ownership of the role responsibilities. Give them flexibility in your role and you will reap the rewards tenfold.
