Sales Navigator Revelations and Function Codes Earnhire

The demise of X-Ray has caused everyone to take a closer look at LinkedIn searches.

LinkedIn’s Sales Navigator has a different algorithm than Premium or LinkedIn Recruiter. There’s no good reason for this – different development teams just got out of sync.

Sales Navigator is pretty much “thinking” LinkedIn (sarcasm!) and has a huge user base.

Over 1,665M profiles.

665 million profiles not accounted for by other accounts and PrintingThat’s tough to say. In 2022, I posted The LinkedIn Software Crisis (overview). At that point, LinkedIn Recruiter was showing 400 million “extra” profiles. It was a bug, but that post and my subsequent connection with the Director of Engineering at LIR fixed it. Maybe it’s the same bug that makes Sales Navigator count uploaded resumes as profiles.

Nonetheless, I think Sales Navigator is a good choice for sourcing. Sales Navigator has a good set of search filters. It would be great if I understood the hidden operators, which I don’t.

What I like about Sales Navigator are the search URLs: they are “readable”, can be shared, and can expose various internal codes.

For example, I selected all functions in the search and got the following list of function codes from the URL that are not officially documented:

Accounting = 1
Management = 2
Arts and Design = 3
Business Development = 4
Community and Social Services = 5
Consulting = 6
Education = 7
Engineering = 8
Entrepreneurship = 9
Finance = 10
Healthcare Services = 11
HR = 12
Information Technology = 13
Law = 14
Marketing = 15
Media and Communications = 16
Military and Defense Services = 17
Operations = 18
Product Management = 19
Program and Project Management = 20
Purchase = 21
Quality Assurance = 22
Real Estate = 23
Research = 24
Revenue = 25
Customer Success and Support = 26

Secret Operators do not work in SN, but you can use these codes in Recruiter or Lite with Operators. function:.

There are always caveats to LinkedIn calculated data. LinkedIn isn’t very good at interpreting data. Many members don’t have capabilities assigned. Sales Navigator 1BN result without function. 2/3 of the profile. There are several ghost profiles, so the high numbers may be the result of that. Always make sure that you don’t include calculated values such as features (or years of service, etc.) as part of your search.

Unfortunately, LinkedIn is lagging behind. In the age of AIRegardless of which account you use, it’s best to use Boolean searches when possible and understand how the selections work.
