Job seekers spend a lot of time trawling through job sites and sending out mass resumes, but rarely get a response from employers, let alone an interview: Employers receive 102 to 137 applications for each job from both social media networks and job sites, according to a 2014 study. An effective job search and employer interest requires careful thought, research, and strategy. To make the most of your job search and get on your desired career path, consider following these five steps:

1. Understand the job search criteria.

Think about your top five priorities, whether that be company culture, salary, or specific job role. “Understanding what motivates you as an employee will make it easier to apply to opportunities that align with your skills and ambitions,” says Paul Sandusky, vice president of talent acquisition and development at Yahoo!. 3. Read the job description carefully.

Reading job descriptions during your job search may take some time at first, but it will save you a lot of time in the long run because you will avoid applying for jobs that aren’t a good fit.

4. Customize your resume and cover letter.

5. Enable your referral network.

Many jobs are not advertised, so it is a good idea to attend relevant industry events and conferences, career-related lectures and seminars, alumni events and training sessions. Let people know you are looking for work and ask about open positions.

Also let your friends know that you are looking for a job and ask if they would be willing to email you your resume and provide them with sufficient information about your experience and skills. Chances are that at least one of your friends knows everyone and knows a few people who can provide you with advice or a stepping stone.

While there is no silver bullet when it comes to job hunting, the best approach is to focus on quality over quantity in your job search and stimulate relationships.
