Job Description
The Process Safety Engineer is responsible for leading the process safety program at the Torrance polystyrene site, ensuring adeherence to process safety management (PSM) requirements, AmSty process safety policies, work processes, standards and mechanical integrity program.
This position will serve as a subject matter expert and champion to drive strong process safety culture in the plant. The position provides a lead role in overseeing compliance and managing process safety risk at the site.
Primary Responsibilities
- Lead the Process Safety Program to drive performance improvement and ensure adherence to PSM requirements and AmSty process safety policies, work processes, and standards at the plant level (e.g., pre-startup safety reviews, management of change, process hazard analysis).
- Manage the mechanical integrity program.
- Direct risk assessment techniques including process hazard analyses and layers of protection analysis, including reviewing and recommending risk evaluation methods for new projects.
- Lead, facilitate, or participate in plant incident investigations, particularly those related to process safety, to determine effective solutions to prevent recurrence.
- Provide training to plant personnel regarding the process safety and mechanical integrity program and procedures, as well as hazard recognition.
- Coordinate the management of change (MOC) program for the site and be responsible for maintaining process safety information.
- Ensure timely completion of action items resulting from process safety gaps identified during PHAs, audits, investigations, and self-assessments; manage the facility’s action item process.
- Maintain plant process safety information (such as PHA and LOPA documentation, safety requirements specification forms, reactive chemicals grid, hazardous area classification drawings, Chemical Exposure Index and Fire & Explosion Index calculations).
- Compile, analyze, and report mechanical integrity and process safety metrics and leverage the Process Safety and Reliability Networks in AmSty to identify and resolve opportunities for improvement.
- Actively participate in the AmSty Process Safety Network by sharing significant earnings, contributing during meetings, and participating in the development of corporate-level process safety initiatives.
- Identify continuous improvement opportunities through interaction with all process safety stakeholders.
- Serve as the plant’s subject matter expert in a specialty field of process safety.
Job Requirements
- Engineering degree.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to effectively develop and maintain relationships with all levels of the organization.
- Ability to collaborate and generate solutions that effectively balance process safety with the needs of the manufacturing environment.
Preferences
- Preferred 3+ years experience in a PSM-covered facility.
- Preferred working knowledge of mechanical integrity-related industry codes and standards (ASME, NACE, API 570/510/653).
Relocation is not available with this position.
