How you will make history here…

The Scientist while be responsible for the coordination and execution of product development and commercialization Beverage and other shelf stable initiatives including new platform line extension innovation, cost optimization, ingredient testing and application, and quality improvements.

You will bring a practical application and understanding of food ingredient and technology principles, and the identification and innovative creation of new and unique products that are instrumental in creating food our consumers love, while achieving business goals by ensuring that objectives, product design and timelines are met. You will lead benchtop, pilot plant, and plant trials to test and create prototypes throughout the product development and commercialization process.

The individual will possess and demonstrate a passion for food innovation, understanding of connection between consumer insights and food product design, ingredient functionality, product and package interaction, low pH shelf stable foods, hot fill and hold process technology, design of experiments, and highly effective communication. You will provide technical leadership in execution of new products and processes in an environment that fosters innovation and calculated risk taking.

What you will do…

  • Work with technical and business teams to identify and define product concepts and establish project objectives.
  • Leads the identification, assessment, and validation of formulations from benchtop through commercialization while partnering with the cross functional team (Marketing, Sensory, Operations/Supply Chain, Engineering, Manufacturing, QA, Regulatory, Process Development and Package Development) and externally with vendors, co-manufacturers, and lab services 
  • Excellent analytical skills, strong attention to detail, good communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Passion for food science, product development, ingredient technology, and consumers as it relates to productivity opportunities, and innovation for new products.
  • Can determine, with guidance, the root cause of a problem and execute effective solutions. 
  • Ensures all proper documentation is recorded accurately and project milestones are on schedule.
  • Leverage vendor capabilities, where appropriate, to expand formulation possibilities, research new ingredients, product technologies and/or increase speed to market.Work with vendors to research new ingredients, product technologies, and/or processes to develop unique and innovative products.
  • Develop prototypes to support concept and ideation exploratory work. Reformulate based upon consumer direction.
  • Formulate products for scale-up. Conduct trials in the Pilot plant or manufacturing facilities to assess manufacturing capability and consumer acceptability.
  • Interface product design with various nutritional guidelines, product specifications, and cost constraints.
  • Extensive knowledge of ingredients and food systems.
  • Work with Process Development and Supply Chain to identify internal or external manufacture needs
  • Demonstrate flexibility and agility to react rapidly to change in project scope.
  • Ability to work with support groups and functions effectively in a team environment.
  • Develop awareness of industry developments and pursue ingredient, product, or technology advances for application to new and innovative product initiatives.

What you bring to the table…

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Food Science or related field with 2 years of experience food R&D product development OR Master’s degree in Food Science with 1 year of food R&D experience. [Relevant internships or Co-Op programs will be counted toward the experience requirement]

It would be great to have…

  • Demonstrated skills in commercializing shelf stable products in the manufacturing environment is desired. Beverage commercialization experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of high acid foods and preservation technology.
  • Knowledge of consumer testing methodologies and experimental design framework.
  • Ability to work with ambiguity and seek creative solutions.
  • Work effectively in team environment; communicate and influence effectively both verbally and in writing with cross-functional teams and R&D management.
  • Comfortable driving decisions, with ability to delegate tasks to contractors, technicians and/or co-ops as appropriate, and provide training and feedback as necessary.
  • Strong planning and organizing skills.
  • Good oral and written communications as well as presentation skills are required.
  • Computer skills including: basic fluency in Microsoft Office, database and internet tools.
  • Ability to walk or stand up for three-quarters of the work day. Physical ability to lift weight of approximately 30 lbs.
  • Travel required

Compensation and Benefits:

The target base salary range for this full-time, salaried position is between 

$73,000-$105,000

Individual base pay depends on work location and additional factors such as experience, job-related skills, and relevant education or training. Total pay may include other forms of compensation. In addition, we offer competitive health, dental, 401k and wellness benefits beginning on the first day of employment.
