Ottawa Tourism launches innovative food donation program -Earnhire

Through a pioneering partnership with La Tablée des Chefs, Ottawa is maximizing food recovery from the events sector through donations to local community organizations.

Ten hotels and venues have joined a pioneering new food recovery programme. Ottawa Tourism Give large event venues the tools to donate surplus food to local community organizations. La Tablet des Chefsa non-profit organization with a mission to feed and educate Ottawa’s efforts to reduce food waste and address food insecurity, will ensure their hospitality partner donors have a food recovery process that is sustainable, safe, organized and easy to implement into their foodservice operations.

The initiative is part of Ottawa’s Destination Management Plan to increase sustainability and social responsibility. “This partnership marks a major step forward in our efforts to build a more resilient and sustainable tourism and events industry,” said Michael Crocutt, president and CEO of Ottawa Tourism. “We are proud to join forces with an organization as talented and thoughtful as La Table des Chefs. We are confident that by working together, we can make a meaningful impact on both the environmental and social fronts towards the broader wellbeing of our local community.”

The growing list of hotels and venues participating in the program includes Fairmont Chateau Laurier, one of Ottawa’s most famous historic landmarks overlooking Parliament Building and the Rideau Canal; Casino Lac Leamy Entertainment Resort, located minutes from downtown Ottawa in Gatineau, Quebec; the historic Lord Elgin Hotel located downtown just steps from the National Arts Centre, Rideau Canal and Parliament Building; 486 Ottawa Marriott Hotel, close to Parliament Building; the environmentally conscious and energy friendly Shaw Centre Convention Centre with 192,000 square feet of highly flexible meeting space and stunning views of downtown Ottawa through its glass façade; The Westin Ottawa with direct access to the Shaw Centre convention facilities and CF Rideau Centre retail complex; TD Place, a sports and special events venue in the vibrant Glebe district; and the modern and eco-friendly Hyatt Place Ottawa West, located in the Nepean district just west of Ottawa’s city centre. My Catering Group, which offers full-service corporate event catering, and the bright, minimalist Alt Hotel Ottawa, located in Ottawa’s downtown business district.
